    Hello world!

I created Rose Petals and Cream to share my thoughts on wellness, self-improvement, travel, bits of elegance, simple nothings, engaging stories from the web, and book reviews.  I hope these posts appeal to you. It is 93 degrees here in Southern California as I am writing this. I am sitting here looking at the heat rising off the pavement and wishing I was on a sandy beach somewhere with my toes in the sand, drinking a nice tall glass of lemonade. I was born and raised here in Southern California and this has to be the hottest summer I have ever experienced. Bring on the Fall. Fall is my very…

Where Did I Come From? The Importance of Finding My Ancestry

Where Did I Come From? Since I was a little girl, I wanted to know my roots. Where did I come from? Who were my ancestors? I grew up with my mom and younger sister, but not my father. My father left when I was just a year old.  He never contacted us again. He just disappeared. We were not in communication with his side of the family, other than a one-time visit when I was ten years old. They also had no clue where my father was. Over time, we lost contact with them as well.  Therefore, the only family I knew was on my mother’s side of the…

    A Taste of Elegance

Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons, Oxfordshire, England

Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons is the epitome of luxury. From time to time, I will post about places, experiences, and things that draw me in and capture my senses and are the essence of elegance, class, and sophistication. Some, I have experienced personally and others I have not. If that is the case, I will mention it, as I want to be as transparent as possible, However, it deserves a mention, so you can experience it for yourself.  One of them is Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire, England.

9 Ways to Get A Better Night’s Sleep

Elusive Sleep Will I ever get a better night’s sleep? I toss and turn and count my 1000th sheep for the night – an issue I struggle with each night. I’m tired of feeling tired and waking up with only 2-4 hours of sleep a night, with little energy to work my day. As soon as my head hits the pillow, my mind decides it’s time to party. At midnight, the party’s just getting started. I revisit an event 16 years ago in vivid detail, or replay a song over and over again I heard earlier. Also, it enjoys playing every iteration of a conversation I want to have with…

New England in the Fall: 7 Places You Must Visit

Nothing compares with New England in the Fall – curls of Cherrywood smoke escaping tall chimneys; pumpkins taking up residence on every doorstep; and sunburnt leaves dancing to the crisp wind’s song as they fall to the ground. Summer just gave its last curtain call and  therefore, I am reminded that Fall is here. There is a colorful portrait of beauty in autumn leaves, especially when it forms a colorful quilt of rusts, oranges, yellows, scarlets, and maroons, over an entire town. Autumn casts its spell on me every time it makes its appearance. I love the sound of leaves and acorns crunching beneath my feet as I walk through a…

The Lost Art of Letter Writing

Pen Pals My feelings were expressed on the cream-colored scalloped-edge paper. I folded the letter in the matching envelope, licked it closed, and headed to the post office. The postmaster said it would arrive in Toronto by the end of the week. Two weeks later, I looked down the street in search of the letter carrier. Would Connie tell me to go with Bill or Gary to the Senior Prom? I depended on Connie’s advice. It wasn’t like I could pick up the phone and call Toronto.

Once Upon A Book: A Man Called Ove

I Love Books There is little doubt when you walk into my home that I love reading. I have a library of about 2500 books. There were actually over 3200 books at one point, but when I moved, I couldn’t take them all with me and so many were donated. I love books. My book travels have taken me throughout time all across many lands, oceans, and galaxies. I was with Jefferson and Adams when independence rang. In the Civil War, I fought alongside the Union and Confederate soldiers. I also sailed with Columbus and Magellan across the ocean blue. Even Queen Elizabeth I and I

    Stories From the Web

From time-to-time, I’ll post 5 stories from the web, which I believe will be of interest to you.  I hope you will find them fun, entertaining, and even valuable. Enjoy! This is a fun read: 21 Magical Foods and Drinks to Try at Harry Potter World. Wouldn’t I love to be a food tester here. Butterbeer is a big hit. It apparently tastes like butterscotch. They even serve butterbeer ice cream. How about sticky toffee pudding, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, or chocolate frogs? Which one would you start out with? Anti-blister balm, a retractable small lint roller, and the coolest of all, a credit card light bulb that fits in…
